Dr. Sarah Smith

Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Sarah grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. Her family moved to the Twin Cities when she was 6 and she has called it home ever since! She attended the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for her undergraduate degree in Animal Science with a pre-vet emphasis. She went to vet school at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and obtained her DVM in 2015. Dr. Sarah’s first introduction to veterinary medicine was when she had two rats as a child, named Mac and Tosh. When Tosh developed a limp, Sarah insisted her mother bring her and the rat to the clinic to find out what was going on. Several x-rays and syringes of cherry flavored pain medication later, and Tosh was right as rain! She worked at a clinic in high school and undergrad that furthered her exposure to veterinary medicine, particularly in small animals, and piqued her interest in soft tissue surgery and dentistry. Her passion is fostering the human animal bond, and empowering owners by directly involving them in their pet’s care. Dr. Sarah’s areas of interest include dentistry, soft tissue surgery, and most recently, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. In January 2021, Dr. Sarah joined St. Paul Pet Hospital. She loves working at a diverse practice that focuses on a team-based approach to providing high quality medicine. As of 2025, the drive to provide comprehensive and integrative care to patients led Dr. Sarah to became a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. It is a wonderful tool to harness the body’s ability to heal, and is a phenomenal compliment to Western medicine! She is so excited to add this to St. Paul Pet’s already long list of services. Dr. Sarah lives in Maplewood with her husband, their three crazy cats (Ana, Maggie, and Yuki), and their four chickens. Yuki is a loner by nature and model by trade, easily the most photogenic creature in the household. Ana explores the heights of the house, finding new and exciting ways to test if gravity is still working. Maggie, the resident tripod, keeps tabs on the chickens through the windows. When she’s not at work, Dr. Sarah loves to play card and video games with friends, read murder mysteries, and crochet anything from sweaters to cat toys. She also enjoys spending relaxing evenings with her family over bonfires and cider.

Dr. Sarah practiced Indonesian music and dance for 8 years while in middle and high school!
